Term-time evening activities

It goes without saying that our term time evening activities are lots of fun – but they’re also ASDAN accredited (Certificate in Employability). And to make them even more awesome, the young people get to take home a free bike, tool bag or make-up/grooming kit upon successful completion of their course.

We run 8- to 10-week evening programmes two or three evenings each week during term time (5.30 – 8pm). There’s plenty opportunities to go round, because each course offers 8 places – and each term we can offer up to 24 places. The young people can choose from the following courses:

  • Introduction to bikeability, where young people learn to strip & build, maintain and ride a bike safely
  • Introduction to hair, where young people learn hairdressing skills such as shampooing, blow drying and styling.
  • Introduction to beauty, where young people learn to do a manicure, facials, pedicure and waxing.
  • Introduction to DIY, where young people learn speed fit plumbing, tiling and/or build a personal project.

Each term, we focus on a specific area in Newham. Before the start of each term we run a roadshow to enrol young people. When we’re up and running, we pick up the young people for their chosen courses in our own minibus and we drop them back at the pick-up point at the end of the evening.

Each course will offer up to two units for their Certificate in Employability. Returnees can complete two more units the following term to make up a full award in Level 1. The real die hards who complete 4 courses will gain a full certificate in level 1.
